This is my Bailey and her story. She was my best friend, my love and the joy of my life. She is the reason I will spend the rest of my life doing all in my power to CLOSE PUPPY MILLS!
Ten years ago, I had heard of puppy mills and knew not to buy a puppy from a pet store. I saw an ad in my local paper for Yorkie puppies and found myself in the home of a lady who was selling a litter for her sick sister or so she said. I chose the most beautiful little puppy I had ever seen and could not wait to bring my "Bailey" home.
On our first morning Bailey refused to eat, vomited and had diarrhea. The Vet prescribed medication and for the next 3 weeks I tried everything to entice her to eat. Suddenly one evening Bailey began to hemorrhage. I rushed her to the Vet and she spent the next several days in Intensive Care. Somehow my tiny little 2 pound girl survived. The Vet said she might be a puppy mill dog and recommended an allergist. Sadly, Bailey was found to be allergic to so many things ... trees, grass, weeds, dust mites, mold and on & on. Luckily I have professional expertise in asthma and allergies and knew what I had to do. I made many changes to our home including air vent filters, allergy covers on all beds and air filters in all rooms.
Bailey began to improve and this spunky, lovable adorable little puppy became the sweetest part of my life. It was pretty obvious to me that I had lost my heart to her and would do anything she needed. As the words of my Vet rang in my ears, I began to research the cruel Puppy Mill business. I discovered that the lady selling the puppies for her sick sister was indeed a Puppy Mill Broker and little Bailey was a puppy mill puppy. It was an easy decision for me to start my Non-profit CLOSEPUPPYMILLS.com to fight this multi-million dollar business that condemns dogs to a lifetime of cruel confinement, many with little or no food, water, Vet care or even the simple pleasure of human touch. When I held Bailey I would think of the pain, loneliness and suffering her parents must be enduring not to mention what she and I had already endured.
When she was 3 1/2 years old Bailey's breathing worsened and she was diagnosed with Tracheal Collapse. She required surgery and my brave little girl fought valiantly for her life making it through surgery and endearing her surgeon and all who cared for her. As Bailey's breathing improved, I cherished every happy moment with her and there were many. Much too soon her breathing deteriorated again and she needed another surgery.
Just 4 weeks after her second surgery at only 5 years old the Vet said nothing more could be done as Bailey gasped for breath. I made the agonizing decision to euthanize her. At the moment Bailey took her last breath I felt as if my own heart had stopped beating.......

NEW NEWS - 2024
- PENNSYLVANIA: PA'S Dog Law to fund the enforcement of the state's puppy mill law. Pet stores will now be required to post health and breeder information for puppies. They must also increase transparency in puppy advertising.
( Let's hope that this will be enforced! )
- NEW YORK: Pet stores will be prohibited from selling, puppies, cats and rabbits starting December 2024. This will stop about 50 pet stores from selling puppy mill puppies!!

PUPPY PROTECTION ACT:
Named after Goldie, a beautiful soul, who lived her entire life in a puppy mill. USDA inspectors saw her suffering and did NOTHING to help her. Consequently, she died a torturous death. This must STOP!
*Please contact your US Senators & Representatives and tell them to SPONSOR THE PUPPY PROTECTION ACT. The USDA needs to enforce the Animal Welfare Act & start punishing puppy millers for inhumane conditions in these kennels (mills!)
